How We Choose Foto Friday Winners
We started our Foto Friday contests a year ago after Take Your Dog to Work day. So many of our fans were posting pictures to our page that we thought it would be fun to start a contest amongst the photos. We know how much fun it is to take pictures of your canine companions, and knew that this would be a great way to show them off! From the beginning, though, we want to make sure that the contest had a level playing field, and committed to only picking a winner based off the editors' choice as opposed to a voting campaign.
Foto Friday's have been so successful that we have integrated the contest into our website with many additional features. Soon, you'll be able to "like" a photo through your facebook account to vote for your favorites, and even upload photos yourself to the gallery. The photo with the most likes will win an alternate prize. As always, the grand prize, 2nd place winners, and runners-up each week will be awarded to the editors' choice. In addition, we'll tell you why we picked the winning photos each week... what we think makes them great photos. You'll hear from our editors, myself, and other professional photographers from the LIFE+DOG team so you can apply the characteristics of the winning photo to your own future submissions. And, with the debut of Issue 13 of LIFE+DOG, we're kicking off the L+D Photo column with insider tips and tricks to take stunning portraits of your best friends.
So, just how do we pick the winner? That's a good quesiton. It's a simple process. Each of the editorial team members choose their favorites and then we combine them. The photos are judged on a scale like this:
- Up to 10 points for depiction of the weekly theme
- Up to 10 points for originality
- 1-3 points based on quality of the photo. (1-camera phone, 2-amateur, 3-skilled amateur or professional. Hint--- you can take a camera phone photo to 3 points by using a program like instagram!)
As you can see, professionals and amateurs alike have an equal chance, as long as you exhibit the weekly theme well, and add a dose of creativity to your pictures. We can't wait to see what you come up with!
